To change or not to change, that is a question…

Updated: Oct 20, 2024

A client in her early sixties came to me asking for help with her job search. She had been a private caregiver to her husband for seven years until he passed away. Before becoming a full-time caregiver, she worked as an executive for a well-known financial institution. After her husband died, she felt lost not only because of the loss of her husband but also her confidence in returning to the job market. She didn’t know what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. She was unemployed for over seven years; she was not confident with her employability in terms of her age, her gap of employment, and the lack of clarity about what she wanted in her life.

After working with me for a couple of weeks, not only had she gained back her confidence but she got hired by a company in a different industry which she had never worked in before. She got hired for a non-management position where she was able to utilize her transferable skills. One year later, she got promoted to become the trainer of her team responsible for training new employees. She found her value again in her transition.

There may come a time in your working life when you decide to change careers. People seek to change careers for many different reasons. It could be your goals or values have changed; you may have discovered new interests that you would like to incorporate into your job, or you may wish to make more money or have more flexible hours, or it could be because of what has been happening in the economy and the world that has pivoted you. No matter what situation you are in, ask yourself what is it for you to change careers and are you strategic about changing your careers?

When you think about changing careers, there are advantages to being strategic about it. For example, a strategic career change will likely lead to greater job satisfaction. Whether you are just thinking of changing careers or seriously considering it, before you decide, it is critical to take the time to evaluate your present situation, to explore career options, and decide if your career goal needs making over to something that will be more satisfying for you.
